Common Injuries That Can Occur
Sprain – overstretching or tearing the ligaments
Strain – overstretching or tearing muscles or tendons
Tendonitis – common in sports like, golf, tennis, jogging, CrossFit, with overuse of specific muscle groups. This is the inflammation of tendons causes pain and swelling. The main question is can you continue playing sports with tendonitis?
Bursitis – this is the inflammation of the lubricated cushion between the bone and soft tissue of a joint. Most common in shoulder, hip, elbow, and knee. Repetitive movement, excessive pressure of a joint can cause bursitis.
Knee injuries – meniscal and/or ligament tear
Shin splints – also known as medial tibial stress syndrome- is inflammation of the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue around your inner border of tibia.
Swollen muscles
Achilles tendon rupture
Fractures
Dislocations
Rotator cuff tears
Treatment includes:
- Pain and swelling management
- Flexibility and ROM
- Strength and endurance
- Proprioception and coordination
- Functional rehabilitation
The athlete will have gradually returned to game when there is no sign of pain or weakness with increase in activity and the sport-specific demands are optimum.
